And looking closer

The harbour in the early morning light. (O.K. not that early!)

Grey Morning

Here we are, back on the outskirts of North End. If you look really carefully you can see the cranes in the harbour.

Bust!

Those of you who live in PE will know that today is more like this than my previous scheduled post

Who needs a house?

Give me one of these babies and I'll make a plan!

Pillars and sun

Dare I make a comparison to De Chirico?

Little house on the prairie

I guess it used to be a guard house for the parking lot. Now it's unused, just like the 'lot.

I couldn't resist

Cruising around before the start of the business day I came across this on the main drag.
I'm guessing he's been broken into before!

Deeper and deeper

Into the back streets of North End we go. In narrow one-way streets, workshops and flats, steel and concrete.

Modern day monolith

I have only really been on one train trip. From London to Leeds, and it sure beat the bus.
I hear from first hand sources that the current South African train carriages are looking really good.
Maybe it's time to get the map out...

It's not all concrete

This is slightly above North End. I always think how lucky we are to have so many open spaces in our fair city.
I wonder if there is any legislation protecting them?

Speechless in North End

Another photo that defies comprehension. I love it.

Concrete sunrise III

It's the right time of the year for dramatic side lighting here in North End. And I plan to take full advantage of it.

door to nowhere

Another alley between two buildings blocked off by a one-of-a-kind door.
And don't forget the barbed wire with bits of plastic stuck to it.

Concrete sunrise II

Another mobile pic of questionable quality.
I still like it though.

Street festival

Congratulations to the Alliance Francaise Port Elizabeth for an excellent street music festival on Saturday. It seems like they stage these events around the world.
This was outside their premises in Richmond Hill, pretty much adjacent to North End.
Let's hope their are more to come.
(And yes, I did shoot these with my mobile.)

Crowd shot

Tonight is the last world cup match at the Port Elizabeth stadium. Here's one from last Friday. If you look carefully (and zoom in) on the right-hand side you will see my favourite bit. It looks like a policeman and a member of the public sharing a joke.

Concrete sunrise

My morning commute, walk, meander takes me under the freeway. It reminds me of a Dave Goldblum line:
I was born in a working man's town/ between the harbour and the factories.
You can download his "Say Africa" here for a measley 7 South African bucks.
Or see Vusi performing it at the world cup opening ceremony here.

No flashy stuff today

No "glamour" football shots today.
It's back to the raw concrete, cracks in the pavement, missing hand rails.
Beauty to my retinas.

And to conclude my kinda blue

Yesterday was the spectators, today the spectator's cars.
Our humble street has never seen anything like this.

Another week and the soccer world cup will all be over.
Port Elizabeth will miss all the visitors, you guys have made daily life really interesting lately.

One of a kind

Will PE ever see anything like this again?
People from all over the world came to our back yard, or watched on tv.
It'll be quite sad when its over.

after the football

Did I tell you I'm working on my first blues song? "Vuvuzelas before sunrise."

Back from the dead (almost)

Here's a little something to start off again. A panorama from the same angle as my previous Port Elizabeth stadium shot.
Today is Brazil vs Holland, widely billed as the single biggest event in the history of PE.
What will North End be like after the world cup?
So hopefully my dry spell will end and I'll snap some pics of the surrounding streets.
